Seven years ago tomorrow, hip-hop lost one of its most colorful and talented son in Andre “Mac Dre” Hicks. I’ve been a fan of Dre’s music since the early 1990’s. Even before he went to prison Dre was a force in the Bay Area. I was honored to write a story about his legacy in the Dec/Jan 2006 issue of XXL. If I’m not mistaken this was the first time Dre’s mom, Mac Wanda and Kilo Kurt had done interviews after Dre’s untimely death.
